The learner will exchange ideas and information with others using written text in a manner effective and appropriate for the intended audience.
Artifact #1: Written Communication
The artifact I have chosen to represent my written communication skills is an informative research paper titled “Investigating the Impact of IFRS Adoption in Developing Countries.” I completed this paper for ENG-112: Writing/Research in the Disciplines during the 8-week summer term of 2024. The purpose of this assignment was to conduct an investigation into a specific topic within my discipline and present well-researched findings in an objective and organized manner. I selected this topic because of its relevance to the field of accounting and its real-world implications for financial reporting standards on a global scale. This artifact demonstrates my ability to research, synthesize information from authoritative sources, and communicate complex ideas effectively.
To successfully complete this paper, I set two key goals for myself. The first goal was to research and understand complex accounting and financial reporting sources. This goal was critical because many of the sources I relied on—such as peer-reviewed journals and financial research papers—contained highly technical language and advanced economic concepts. To achieve this, I used resources such as the Journal of Accountancy, the International Journal of Accounting, and various economic research articles to gather relevant data. Throughout the writing process, I was able to analyze and interpret these sources effectively, demonstrating my ability to navigate complex written communication.
The second goal was to correctly document and synthesize information from authoritative sources to support my claims. A major component of this assignment was ensuring that all sources were cited correctly, both in-text and in the references section, according to APA guidelines. I achieved this by properly citing paraphrased information, including in text citations correctly, and creating a references page containing the complete list of sources. These sources also contributed to the neutral and professional tone I use throughout the paper. By doing so, I was able to construct a well-supported and objective analysis. Similar assignments in other courses, such as my problem-solution essay for ENG-112 and my research-based exams in HIS-111 and HIS-112, also helped improve my ability to cite sources accurately and strengthen my academic writing skills.
Looking back, this artifact played a significant role in shaping my written communication abilities. Through this assignment, I gained valuable experience in researching complex topics, organizing information logically, and presenting ideas clearly and professionally. These skills will continue to benefit me in future coursework, as well as in my professional career, where effective written communication is essential for communicating audit findings, accounting principles and standards, and data analysis. The knowledge and techniques I developed through this project have improved my confidence in my writing abilities and will serve as a strong foundation for my future academic and professional endeavors.
