Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) July, 2023
FBLA is the largest business student organization in America. It empowers young minds to tackle complex business topics, learn about various industries, and develop technical and soft skills. Although I have competed in FBLA five times, my experience at the 2022-2023 FBLA National Conference in Atlanta, GA was the most significant. With the help of our advisor, Mr. Troy Burns, me and my two partners earned 5th place at the national convention in data analysis. This recognition was the culmination of months of long hours, video calls, and late nights as we prepared a seven-minute presentation analyzing various international markets for a fictitious business. And although we were ecstatic to receive national recognition for our work, we understood that the skills we had developed in preparation for the event were the true prizes. I hope to continue my involvement with FBLA as a judge when I enter the workforce.
Servants With a Heart (SWH) November, 2023
SWH is a charity organization whose mission it is to provide nutritional meals to hungry families in Charlotte, NC and around the world. I have served with the organization several times when they partnered with my church, but perhaps my most treasured memory with the organization was during an "Impact Day" when members of the community can sign up. My role was very simple- pack food, ensure each bag was weighed correctly, and seal each bag. However, I knew that my small sacrifice made a big difference in the lives of hungry families, both in my community and around the world. Coming from a country that experiences food insecurity, I have seen the devastating effects that hunger has on communities. Therefore, I plan to continue serving at SWH and similar organizations, even as I enter the professional world.
Website Development
My website theaccountinggeek.com is the product of my love for service and passion for accounting. My website is intended to be a wealth of free resources for small business owners without formal accounting or tax training, providing them with relevant, simple knowledge to support them through their journey. Although the website is certainly a work in progress, developing the content, layout, and configuration for the website has been a truly rewarding experience. So far, I have researched several facets of business ownership, learned about relevant accounting and tax legislation, created Excel spreadsheets to be used as templates, and created a detailed business plan to assist business owners with their planning needs. In the future, I intend to finish the business guide and begin work on an accounting manual for small business owners.
Small Business Assistance
I have had the privilege of assisting a local small business with its accounting and website needs, developing my practical skills and knowledge. Although I am not a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), I am permitted to provide basic bookkeeping services and inform the owners about relevant tax legislation relating to their circumstances. I have also had the opportunity to design a logo for the business and begin work on a website that matches their business needs. To be involved with a real business is a true privilege and has greatly expanded my appreciation for the practical aspects of owning a business. I intend to continue my involvement with this small business as I transition to a four-year university.
